Georgia University Offers Eating Class

Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, is offering "Appetite Awareness Training" to students. Participating students bring dinner with them to class and learn about healthy eating behaviors and habits. The instructor, psychology professor Linda Craighead, comments on the goal of the class: "The idea is to teach people to eat really slowly and focus on enjoying the food and noticing if they are really hungry or not." Students learn how to recognize physical cues and responses instead of eating because of stress or boredom. Professor Craighead, who specializes in eating disorders and weight management issues, believes that although society glorifies thinness it does not promote healthy eating behaviors. She hopes that this class will combat disordered eating.
