Obesity Linked to Life-Threatening Blood Clots

According to a new study, men with big waists and women with big hips may be at especially high risk for blood clots in veins. The condition, known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), is more common among obese people in general and can be life-threatening if blood clots travel to the lungs.

The study, conducted in Denmark, included data from about 56,000 men and women collected over the course of 10 years. At the beginning of the study, participants were measured for height, weight, waist size and hip size, and answered questions about their health and lifestyle.

During the study, 641 participants developed VTE. Obese men with big waists were especially likely to develop VTE, but the same correlation was not found in women. Conversely, obese women with large hips were especially likely to experience VTE, but the same was not found in men.
