Wales Launches "Real-Life" Beauty Campaign

Government officials in the small, Western European nation of Wales are set to challenge the size-zero culture by launching a new competition to find images of "real-life" beauty. Members of the national assembly's cross-party group on eating disorders have developed the campaign as a way to combat the super-thin images of models and celebrities that currently dominate the media.

The competition is a collaborative effort with the Dove Self-Esteem Fund. The winner will be announced during Eating Disorders Awareness Week in February. Ms. Bethan Jenkins, leader of the cross-party assembly group, commented on the motivation for the new competition:

"These days we are surrounded by loads of images of stylised, stereotypical beautiful people. More and more, they all look the same. But they don't seem to match up to the beauty we can see in everyday life in our families and friends. Unfortunately for some, consuming media that shows a narrow view on beauty can lead to negative feelings about personal body image and then on to eating disorders. It is estimated that at least 10,000 people in Wales have serious eating disorder issues. I want to get people thinking about body image and challenge some of the models that you see on the pro-anorexia websites."
