More Women Seeking to Be Thin in Pregnancy

This week, a nationally recognized eating disorder treatment facility reported an increase in the number of pregnant women being treated for eating disorders. Experts say that the warning signs of "pregorexia" may include failure to gain weight while pregnant, poor fetal growth, and exercise beyond what is healthy while pregnant.

Healthy weight gain during pregnancy ranges from 25 to 50 pounds, depending upon the expectant mother's weight at conception. However, this amount of weight gain may seem alarming to women who are dealing with eating issues. A woman with a history of disordered eating may be particularly vulnerable during pregnancy because of the inherent emotional stress of becoming a new parent. Thus, experts recommend educating women about what is normal during pregnancy in order to combat unhealthy behaviors.
