Is the Brain to Blame for Female Obesity?

According to a story published this week by the Associated Press, women have more difficulty refusing their favorite foods than men do. This finding comes from a study by researchers at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The study was designed to examine why some people overeat and gain weight and others don't.

All 23 participants 10 men and 13 women fasted overnight; then researchers performed brain scans on them while showing them their favorite foods. Participants also answered questions about their favorite foods and were asked to use a cognitive inhibition technique while viewing the foods to try and suppress their hunger. Researchers found that while men and women both employed the technique, man had greater success in actually calming brain activity in the parts of their brains that respond to food. Gene-Jack Wang, lead researcher, commented on the findings:

"There is something going on in the female & the signal is so much different. Even though the women said they were less hungry when trying to inhibit their response to the food, their brains were still firing away in the regions that control the drive to eat."
