High School Athlete Speaks Out About Anorexia

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel published a story this month about 18-year-old Mariana Lucena. Lucena, currently the number-one runner for the Cypress Bay High School track team, is a recovered anorexic who is speaking out in hopes of helping other young female athletes. Four years ago, Lucenas battle with anorexia left her near death at only 65 pounds. Lucena describes her disease in the simplest, most powerful terms:

When you have an eating disorder, you don't see what other people are seeing, you see that you're not perfect. My mom helped me to realize I was all skin and bones. She thought I was going to my deathbed. It was my mom and friends who helped me turn it around.

Lucena credits running with aiding her recovery. Participating in a sport, she believes, helped her realize the beauty of a strong and healthy body. Lucenas successful recovery from anorexia has given her a new enthusiasm for lifes simple pleasures, and, most importantly, helped her find self-acceptance. I am so happy now & I kiss my dog, I go to school, I always have a smile on my face & I am normal, not perfect, Lucena said. I am afraid of going back but I can catch myself now.
