Arizona Eating Disorder Treatment Facility Plans New Programs for Boys and Men

Eating disorders are typically viewed as afflictions of young, affluent, white females. New research shows, however, that at least one of these assumptions may be outdated. Eating disorders among boys and men are on the rise. In February 2007, a Harvard study upset accepted knowledge about the rate of boys and men who suffer from disordered eating. Of 3,000 adults who participated in the study, one-quarter of those with eating disorders and 40% of binge eaters were male.

Treatment facilities around the country report increased numbers of males requesting treatment for eating disorders. However, until recently, male-only treatment programs for eating disorders have been practically non-existent. As a result of this trend, many treatment providers have been working to develop new programs and treatment methods specifically for male consumers of their services. (Source: Wickenburgsun.com)

In Austin, Texas there is a program specializing in male eating disorders - Austin Sendero.
